Keeper of the Memories #7

Papa used to love to get a good laugh at his grandkids’ expense sometimes.

All out of love, of course.

He was an avid hunter before his stroke.

He used to skin and then hang his deer and elk from a huge hook in the garage.

This one time, probably around 1984, he asked me to go get us an ice cream from the freezer…

The freezer was in the garage.

I open the kitchen garage door and flipped on the light, as I hopped down the steps and turned left toward the freezer…and right in front of me was a dead deer hanging upside down with no skin…

I screamed so loud and was up those steps in a flash and right into grandma’s arms!

Papa was laughing so hard he was almost crying.

Gram…”Floyd Mayfield, you should be ashamed of yourself. That wasn’t nice.”

Papa…”no, but it sure was funny.”
